Doctor reveals that Jake Paul may never be in a professional boxing ring again.
Jake Paul had his jaw broken in two places on Friday night against Anthony Joshua and all is pointing towards this being an end to his fighting career.
Dr Hamrah gave a full report of the impact of Jake’s injuries that will keep him out of a boxing ring for the best part of a year BUT could bring an end to his career.
Doctor Hamrah who is an Oral, Maxillofacial and Facial surgeon said: “Jake Paul, his jaw, he broke it in two places. This is a left parasymphysis fracture and a right body fracture of the mandible. The fracture typically goes through the teeth and roots, which means he also will lose those teeth.
“What does that mean, well, after the fracture heels, usually about eight weeks, it might have to be wire-shut, he is going to get mini plates and screws to bring the bones together.
“He will then have to have dental implants. This is typically done roughly about three months after the fracture heels and the teeth sockets heal. And then another three months until he actually gets the crowns onto the implants.
“It will take 9 months for him to regain 90% of his jaw strength back..”
So in conclusion, in a years time Jake might still be away from a full recovery. But to be fight ready, ready to have that jaw hit again.. that could be a much longer time or, might never come at all.
The harsh truth is, after a good investigation, I am unable to find any credible information on a professional boxer who has not just one, but two plates put into their jaw and was allowed to fight on.
The only name that came up was Arthur Abraham, who fractured his face in 2006 against Edison Miranda. However, it’s only reported on Wikipedia that Abraham had 22 screws and two titanium plates inserted the night after the fight.. No noticeable news outlets reported on this..
Boxing commissions have allowed boxers to fight on professionally with titanium plates in their face, but, I’ve only found that is the case when it’s been with orbital injuries that plates were used, like with Kell Brook, after his 2016 fight against the heavy hitting Gennady Golovkin. Brook fought on 6 more times professionally.
Boxing Commissions have strict criteria when it comes to these types of injures that require titanium plates. It depends on the plates position. If the plates are in an area where punches could directly transfer force to the screws, some commissions may reject the licence.
Bottom line is, there’s little to no examples of boxers with jaw plates fighting on. Also, if the bone healing is imperfect or the plate is exposed/thinly covered, they can refuse on safety grounds.
This could be the end of Jake Paul’s boxing career. Time will reveal all.
